A new breakthrough for PhiniX! A team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences has overcome the contamination problem in Cu1234 superconducting single crystals, publishing their findings in *Chinese Physics B*.
Abstract: Precise XRD Characterization Unlocks the Intrinsic Mechanism of High-Temperature Superconductivity
Recently, the research group of Wang Xiancheng, Jin Changqing, and Zhao Jianfa at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, published important results in *Chinese Physics B*: Breaking through the "contamination bottleneck" problem of Cu1234 high-temperature superconducting single crystals, successfully preparing impurity-free, highly oriented single crystals with a superconducting critical temperature Tc≈115K.
The research used Ådo Nano N3 PhiniX benchtop XRD to complete the key structural verification, and the data was formally adopted in the paper.
Cu1234: A Highly Promising High-Temperature Superconductor with Three Key Advantages
Cu1234 (CuBa₂Ca₃Cu₄O₁₀₊δ) is a rare high-performance copper-based superconductor with three core advantages:
1. High critical temperature Tc≈118K
2. High critical current density Jc≈5×10⁵A/cm²(77K)
3. High irreversible field Hirr≈21T
Its comprehensive performance is comparable to commercial YBCO, and it does not contain toxic elements, making it promising for applications in superconducting power transmission, strong-field magnets, and magnetic levitation.
Industry Pain Point: Precious Metal Contamination Leads to Significant Performance Degradation of Single Crystals
Traditional high-temperature, high-pressure synthesis uses Au/Pt metal capsules. At high temperatures, metal impurities easily diffuse into the crystal lattice, replacing Cu sites, causing the Tc of single crystals to plummet from 118K to 68–111K, far lower than polycrystalline samples, hindering the study of the intrinsic mechanism for a long time.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences team's innovative solution employs a double-layer encapsulation structure of MgO inner liner + Pt outer chamber, physically isolating contamination and completely solving the problems of Pt side reactions and impurity doping.
N3 PhiniX XRD: Hardcore Proof of "Pure Phase, High Orientation, High Quality"
The team used the N3 PhiniX diffractometer (Cu Kα, 40kV/30mA) from Aidu Nanotechnology to complete the test at room temperature, obtaining key structural evidence:

The pure phase + strong c-axis orientation XRD only showed a sharp (00l) diffraction peak, with no impurity peaks or diffraction in other crystal directions, confirming it as pure phase Cu1234 with high orientation along the c-axis.
The crystal parameters are precisely matched, with c=17.955Å obtained from accurate calculation of the diffraction peaks, consistent with the standard value of 17.9–18.0Å. The crystal quality is excellent, with extremely narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) diffraction peaks, indicating high crystal integrity and few defects.

Figure: Cu1234 single crystal XRD pattern (N3 PHINIX test)
Spectrum characteristics: Only strong (00l) diffraction peak appears, no impurity phases, c=17.955Å
Performance breakthrough: Impurity-free single crystal, performance fully recovered
Maximum single crystal size: 300×200×20μm³
Composition close to ideal ratio: Ba:Ca:Cu:O≈2:3:4.54:10.16
No Mg contamination, reliable inert MgO liner
Tc≈115K, high purity of superconducting phase
Summary
This research not only solved the long-standing problem of Tc decay caused by contamination in Cu1234 single crystals, but also established a complete scheme of "contamination-free growth + precise XRD characterization," opening up new space for the study and practical application of high-temperature superconductivity mechanisms.
The N3 PhiniX database, with its robust, reproducible, and high-resolution structural data, continues to help Chinese research teams reach the top of international high-level journals.
